Seconds Out, Round One

Tags: , ,

Just received a letter from John Mann threatening me with a libel action. Click on the graphic below to see it full size.

Mann_letter

I don’t recall making any allegations, John, only asking for clarification and pointing to expenses claims on your own website and the Parliamentary website.

If you could point me in the direction of the offending untruth, I would be happy to rectify.

And as for calling you a ‘wanker’, I was just quoting your own statement in the Independent.

I note that you’re not disputing the rest of the content.

I know you’ve sent a number of this type of letter recently to anyone with the temerity to challenge the world according to Mann, but this blog will not be intimidated.

UPDATE

I’ve just discovered that Mann signed an Early Day Motion in December calling for Libel law Reform as the existing libel laws intimidate writers and stifle free expression and need to be changed.

See my post here

Would you vote for a man like this?

  1. Glad to see that someone has actually decided to take a stand against these people who are spending OUR public money! I haven’t commented on this website before but I have been watching new stories added about Mann.

Mann is a bully! His antics don’t fool the public, you should hear how people talk about him around the town. I wish more people voiced their opinions as this website does, rather than just talk behind his back.

I hope you don’t cancel this website – I think it’s great that someone stands up to people like Mann. We’re all behind you!

    Keep up the good work.

    Wm.

  2. Not nice being critisized is it,Mann. Maybe you think about that before you do it to other people

    Comment by zook — March 10, 2010 @
  3. Not a complete surprise. It isn’t the first time he’s fired off letters like this. He complains about not enough ASBOs for making other peoples lives miserable but is there any wonder people think they can behave badly to others. What a great role model he’s not!

  4. Can someone please explain what to do about an MP who uses official paper to write a letter including such bad language. And he’s MP for Bassetlaw? god help us all.

  5. Wanker.

Comment by Man With A Very Hot Bladder — March 15, 2010 @
  6. Well, if he isn’t a wanker then he’s certainly a tossflap!!!!

And if you’re reading this, Mr Mann you are welcome to sue me- not that you’ll get a penny as I’m on benefits!!!!

  7. Will 50p a week towards your legal costs be acceptable, Mr Mann?????????????????

    Comment by Jobless Oddball — March 15, 2010 @
  8. Mr Mann is in error. He meant to say: “alleged libel”. As he is not a court of law, it is not for him to state what is libellous.

    Comment by That's News — March 15, 2010 @
  9. Until I read he’d sent out false allegations, I hadn’t heard of this wanker.

Your website obviously provides a useful service to the electorate.

Rather than add advertising, had you considered applying for a community grant?

    Comment by Joe Public — March 16, 2010 @
  10. I thoroughly object to you calling Mann a ‘wanker’. IT is indeed libellous.

Spanking one’s monkey is one of the few enjoyable experiences that have yet to be taxed. Consequently the vast majority of British men have been known to spend a quiet minute or two bashing their bishop. These are mostly hard working, tax-paying, solid citizens and you demean us all by naming Mann as one of us.

  11. How have I not come across this blog before? Weird. Anyhoo good job on pissing off an MP. Very commendable. I’ve a good mind to echo a few sentiments towards him by email. Wonder if I’ll get a response? ;-)

When an MP sends you a letter like this it means you’re doing something right. Keep it up!
    Cheers
    Sir Olly

  13. What can you expect. He’s a labour MP full of his own importance.

Labour- lies, damned lies and statistics. The end of democracy, free speech and a busted budget.

    Keep up the good work.

  14. It would be highly amusing to hear him swearing on oath that he has, indeed, never masturbated.

    Comment by David — March 16, 2010 @
  15. I’d never heard of this wanker until now. Seems like this threatening letter has given the story some impetus though, how amusing!

  16. Didn’t come through his solicitor so obviously has not the slightest intention of wasting any real money on pursuing this nonese. Not just a wanker but a pathetic wanker.

  17. Ever considered contacting the parlimentary authoraties to see if this is acceptable use of parlimentary expences, it isn’t communication with a constituent on their issues it is a personal matter. If I were to use work headed note paper to complain to people about personal matters it would be a disiplinary matter.

    Comment by Psi — March 16, 2010 @
  18. @Psi: I have it on some authority that it is not kosher to use HoC paper. I am also informed that he has done this previously and had his wrist smacked by the Commons Standards and Priveleges Committee. A copy of his letter to me is in the post for their consideration

  19. He MUST be a wanker – it says so on his own website:

    “Uk’s Number One International Organist”

    Comment by Paul Hypno — March 16, 2010 @
  20. A quick glance at the ticket prices between Retford and London today indicate that it would be impossible to spend £192 even on a standard class return as Mr Mann did on 20 January 2009 (or for that matter a first class return, which currently costs £119). Source: http://www.johnmannmp.com/travelexpenses0809

I hardly see how any reasonable person could fail to assume that such an expensive ticket was for first class.

And do chase up the use of parliamentary stationary! I don’t want a penny of my taxes spent on writing angry letters to bloggers.

    Comment by Niklas Smith — March 16, 2010 @
  21. Clarification: “…it would be impossible to spend £192 even on a standard class return as Mr Mann did on 20 January 2009″

What I meant was it would be impossible to spend £192 as Mr Mann did on 20 January, on a standard class return or indeed a first class one. Mr Mann’s website says how much was claimed for travel but not which class he travelled in.

    Comment by Niklas Smith — March 16, 2010 @
  22. He doesn’t deny being an Onanist. He just states that the comment was made amongst certain other statements that were inaccurate.

  26. Using HoC’s head paper imo implies that this is HoC’s business. Imo that is gross misinterpretation as well as intimidating behaviour from an MP! I also had never heard of this person until reading this. Not the kind of behaviour I expect an MP to use!

    Comment by zz — March 16, 2010 @
  27. John Mann

You are an inadequate, self-important, snivelling little wanker. Your use of HOC notepaper, for personal purposes, to write a threatening letter is an outright abuse of privilege.

For the purposes of service, I live in Braunau, Austria. You can sue me, if you have the bollocks.

  28. John Mann = Wanker. Fact.

    Comment by Tory Landlord — March 16, 2010 @
  29. Dear Mr Site Owner,

Do have his letter copied and distributed widely to his constituents before the next election. Remind them that this MP appears to spend his time reading blogs (about himself naturally) and dashing off threatening letters to all and sundry. Clearly a man who cannot think of anything better to be getting on with…

  30. Dear Mr Mann.

Thank you for providing us with all the evidence needed to be able to call you, without any fear of contradiction, A Wanker.

  35. Had never heard of your blog nor of MP John Mann until I followed a link to this article on his libel threats. Have now added you to my Favourites & look forward to seeing the outcome of his use of HoC notepaper. Unfortunately for him, all he’s done is to bring unwelcome publicity on himself & confirm many of the comments on the blog.
